Not everything labeled honey is pure honey. Honey from China is sometimes diluted…
If you purchase bottles of processed honey at a typical grocery store, there is a good chance it is not. Unfortunately, not everything labeled “honey” is pure honey, as many products have been filtered and diluted. This is especially true for honey that comes from China.
According to testing that was conducted by Food Safety News, about 75% of the honey sold in American grocery stores is not exactly honey. In particular, the products are lacking pollen, which is the only way to identify the source of the honey. In other words, if there is no pollen, there is no way to know where the “honey” came from.
A lot of the honey you find on shelves has gone through a process of “ultra filtering.” Essentially, this is when the honey has been heated, possibly watered down, and forced through a small filter under extreme pressure to remove pollen.
While testing showed a high percentage of honey that had little or no pollen, there were positive signs. The tests showed that honey from farmer’s markets, co-ops, and “natural” stores had full levels of pollen. They were, essentially, pure honey.
Organic pure honey is an important ingredient in many healthy foods and beverages. Pure honey benefits include better digestive health and a strong supply of antioxidants, making it one of the best additions to your kitchen.
