Why are bees so important?
Our organic drinks use various natural ingredients to create a delicious, refreshing taste. This includes brewed cascara tea, organic lemons juice, and honey.
You don’t need to be a biologist to know that honey, one of the healthiest sweeteners available, comes from bees. These insects are important to ourbeverages, but, as we’ll show, bees are also crucial to many plants, making them a crucial part of the foods we eat and the clothes we wear.
Why Bees are So Important
Without bees, we would not have honey for many of our foods and drinks, including our cascara tea, which is sweetened with honey. But bees are essential to our foods for more than just creating a sweet alternative to processed sugar.
Bees perform the essential function of pollination for many plants across the planet. Essentially, pollination is the act of transferring pollen grains from one plant to another, which stimulates the plant’s reproduction. So a bee visiting numerous plants in a day is crucial to the plant’s reproduction; without the bees, the plants would not be able to create the next generation.
According to an infographic provided by the BBC, using information from the British Beekeepers Association, about 1/3 of the food produced for British consumption is dependent on pollination from bees. Bees pollenate 70 types of crops and contribute 40 million British pounds to their economy (roughly 52 million dollars).
And it’s not just British foods, but many other agricultural products across the globe, including industries in the United States. Farm Journal Media says that cotton, which is used to produce much of our clothing, is dependent on bees for pollination. Bees are incredibly important to the industry, which sees annual revenues averaging $100 billion; that’s a lot of money, a lot of clothing, and a lot of jobs!
You can help bees in your area by protecting bee habitat, avoiding harmful pesticides, or creating a bee garden, which are outdoor areas specifically built for the insects to live and thrive. By creating a welcoming environment for bees, you are doing your part to protect these interesting and important insects!
